High pressure X-ray studies at NSLS

چکیده
The National Synchrotron Light Source offers the COMPRES community a considerable opportunity for x-ray studies using the superconducting wiggler at X17. This beamline has a steep history of high pressure innovations including diamond anvil studies and large volume studies. The superconducting wiggler continues to provide an x-ray source that is competitive with third generation sources for x-ray diffraction studies. In addition, the current plans to build the next x-ray synchrotron at Brookhaven (NSLSII) provides a significant future at the NSLS that requires the presence of COMPRES research to assure access to the NSLSII. With this vision of the NSLS, we held a workshop on February 25 – 26 to assess the community needs and hopes for the next five years. Forty five attendees discussed the strengths and weaknesses, the science goals and technical limitations. We enumerated the needs for support staff and the needs for new equipment to enable initiatives. We set priorities and estimated budgets. Here we present the results of the workshop and provide a budget plan for the next five years. We include a list of participants and the agenda for the workshop as appendices Here we address some of the conclusions of the workshop followed by the detailed proposal for the next five years.

The research philosophy and new capabilities installed at NSLS beamline X26-C to support electronic absorption and Raman spectroscopies coupled with X-ray diffraction are reviewed. This beamline is dedicated full time to multidisciplinary studies with goals that include revealing the relationship between the electronic and atomic structures in macromolecules. The beamline instrumentation has be...
متن کاملSingle-crystal Raman spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography at beamline X26-C of the NSLS
Three-dimensional structures derived from X-ray diffraction of protein crystals provide a wealth of information. Features and interactions important for the function of macromolecules can be deduced and catalytic mechanisms postulated. Still, many questions can remain, for example regarding metal oxidation states and the interpretation of `mystery density', i.e. ambiguous or unknown features wi...
متن کاملInitial results from an in-vacuum undulator in the NSLS X-ray ring.
A short-period in-vacuum undulator for the NSLS X-ray Ring has been developed in a collaboration between SPring-8 and the NSLS, and has achieved its project design goals during commissioning studies. The device is called IVUN (in-vacuum undulator) and employs magnet arrays (31 periods, with an 11 mm period) developed at SPring-8, while the requisite vacuum chamber and mechanical systems were de...

The Soft X-ray Undulator beamline at the NSLS supports a soft x-ray imaging program including scanning transmission microscopy, scanning photoemission microscopy, Gabor and Fourier transform holography, and large angle diffraction. Zone plates from an LBL Center for X-ray Optics/IBM collaboration are used as optical elements. The current instrumentation of the beamline and the experimental stat...
